It’s hard to wrap your head around the fact that one of our two major parties seems to have abandoned its commitment to democracy. Mid-decade gerrymanders, voter suppression efforts, and attempts to manipulate the census are all part of the same desire to take power away from the people.
But we can do something about and we need Urban Radio support: We can fight back. And I couldn’t ask for a better leader in this fight than the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. Together, we can help ensure fair maps that reflect the will of the people by electing leaders who will protect free and fair elections. Today, I’m asking you to fund this work with a donation.
Attorney General Eric Holder and I started the NDRC because we truly believe that fairness is essential to a functioning, truly representative democracy. Over the long term, we still believe every state should draw maps in an objective, fair-minded way. Everyone’s vote needs to count. But in the short term, we can’t let Republican attacks on democracy go unanswered. When they try to ram through new maps after voting has already started, or attempt to do even more in the upcoming lame-duck state legislative sessions, we must stop them.
The NDRC and its partners have done the legwork to identify over 250 state-level elections this November that will make the biggest difference for fair maps and fair access to the ballot box. And we are taking the case directly to voters.
I believe that when democracy is on the line, the American people will choose fairness. But the NDRC needs the resources to invest in and compete in as many elections as possible, in as many states as possible. Can we count on you to make a donation and join the fight for democracy?
Thank you,
Barack Obama
