This week the Senate is voting on the SAVE Act and let’s be clear about what it does.
It would force Americans to show a passport or a birth certificate that matches their legal name to vote. Over 21 million people do not have easy access to these documents. Nearly half of Americans do not have a passport and getting one could cost hundreds of dollars.
That’s not election security. That’s a barrier.
Call your Senators and demand a NO vote on the SAVE Act!
This is a modern-day poll tax, dressed up in paperwork. And we know exactly who it will hit hardest: Black voters, working people, seniors, and anyone whose life doesn’t fit neatly on a piece of paper. And it doesn’t stop there.
The SAVE Act would:
- Force states to purge voter rolls
- Open the door to reporting voters to Homeland Security
- Restrict access to mail-in voting
It is unacceptable that Republicans are more focused on trying to take away our freedom to vote instead of addressing skyrocketing costs or the healthcare crisis. We need to meet this moment with urgency and volume and be unmistakably clear to lawmakers that any bill creating new barriers to voting, including the SAVE Act—must be stopped!
