A performance clip posted to the band’s official Instagram recently surpassed 1 million views. The clip is a 1974 Midnight Special performance of “I Want To Be Free” which sparked an outpouring of fan demand asking why one of the greatest bands in American music history has still not been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, located in their home state of Ohio.
The Ohio Players laid the foundational grooves of 1970s funk, with a catalog later sampled by Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Jay-Z, Outkast, Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac and Mary J. Blige. Their 17 Top 40 hits include classics like “Fire,” “Skin Tight” and “Love Rollercoaster.”
The band returns to their Dayton, Ohio hometown for a live performance on Friday April 24 at the Victoria Theatre giving a perfect timely hook to tell this story.
