Jazz emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, hitting its stride in the 1920s. It was initially a male-dominated world, and women struggled to make their mark in the jazz scene, facing significant barriers in performing and recording during this era. By the 1940s, though, women had made their way into the jazz scene, as shown in this photo of Anna Mae Winburn and The International Sweethearts of Rhythm. This all-female jazz-swing group symbolized a turning point, showcasing women’s evolving role in jazz.
