Need something to talk about that will happen in real time Friday night? This is a first, two Blacks in the US Open Finals. American fans are in for a treat with an all-American men’s semifinal at the US Open. One American will be in the final. But which will it be? Frances Tiafoe is coming off the back of an exceptional comeback over Alex Michelsen, while Ben Shelton upset Carlos Alcaraz after 3:30 AM. One of these men will reach the final. Our writers share their thoughts on who it will be. Predicting this match are Nurein Ahmed, Ilemona Onekutu, Manuel Traquete, Zain Mustafa, and Jim Smith. Who do you think will win?
Ben Shelton produced a seismic upset in the quarterfinals and we are now guaranteed an American man in the final. The interesting part in this semifinal is who can finish points most efficiently rather than who has the better game overall. And we know for a fact that Shelton has the edge there. His serve is an obvious weapon and that lefty forehand caused Alcaraz a lot of trouble. Frances Tiafoe has more ways of creating openings, but I doubt he’ll have enough room to settle between points. Shelton looks unstoppable at the moment and when you consider the draw he’s had to get here, he absolutely deserves.
