| Urban Radio, Attacks on voting rights in the South are not isolated issues. For generations, many of the tactics used to weaken democracy in America were first tested on Black communities in the South — which is why supporting organizations doing year-round voter education, organizing, and advocacy work in these communities matters now more than ever.
The South was often used as a testing ground to see how much political power could be taken from Black communities before the rest of the country responded. And the truth is: it never really stopped. Organizing against these attacks takes resources, and the people pushing voter suppression are counting on exhaustion, silence, and short public memory. That’s why solidarity matters. Because our freedoms are connected whether people want to admit it or not. The fight for voting rights in the South is not separate from the future of democracy across the country. It’s often the warning sign for where the nation is headed next. Black communities have always been at the center of the fight for democracy in America. And right now, that fight continues in courtrooms, state legislatures, local elections, and communities across the South. The South has long been treated like a testing ground for how much democracy can be taken away before the country responds. We cannot afford to wait until these attacks spread further.
